Kiss shot 2021 is a work created for Christina Peeks art show Resourceful Women & Desperate Stratagems by Post Office Projects , she had an area at the back space of the gallery and asked me to produce a work that reflected kissing in cinema , I sourced as many different kinds of this kind of expression as I could find not wanting to rely on the heteronormative style of the medium.
Shut In 2021 was created for the Center of Creative Health , the work consists of people in movies closing the door on the viewer, this represents Tickles mental illness having been Agoraphobic in her teen years ,Tickle wants to deprive the viewer of the world and possibilities on the other side of the door just like Tickle was .The sound is a slowed down Alpha wave the frequency is what happens in your mind when your having a panic attack.
Trailblazer 2020 was created once again for the AFF ,with the help and mentorship with SODA-JERK, I was asked to review that years films for the festival and respond to one. I chose the Earth is as Blue as an Orange ,an amazing movie about generations of woman all taking what they have for granted not realising they only have what they had because the woman before fought for them. Trailblazer was my take on the woman of Australian cinema paving the way for the next ,all the woman in the work are each acknowledging the next woman who was there because a woman had blazed a trial for them to follow and in turn was became the new trail blazer for the next . this was shown at the Newmarch Gallery the Festival theatre screens and the Target hot spot .The works where documented by Georgia Button , fellow artist and the person I shared this extraordinary life changing opportunity with.
A StormCenter is a warning of something dangerous coming, this title was selected for that reason, by highlighting bookended female tropes in western Cinema ,of Fridging a term coined by Gail Simone ,where a female character is killed off so the male lead has an excuse to go on a vengeful rampage, reducing her to nothing more than an excuse for toxic behaviour and The final Girl a trope in horror movies ,were the last man standing is a woman , tickle has created a video work of edited clips from cinema exploring these tropes ,consisting of the works being shown on two televisions side by side connected as a mirror showing the common treads that connect them both ‘woman’ ,the most valuable and the easily disposed of, tickles work has always championed the female presence in cinematic space and how she was empowered in her own life , this work shows that even though change is sometimes glacially slow , it’s still coming and we should all batten down the hatches.
OZ? was created in response to The SODA-JERK Terror Nullius, working with the AFF the Adelaide Film Festival ,with the reflective wall program , I had the privilege of meeting the duo ,they gave me the amazing gift of allowing my short movie to be played on a large cinema screen before there work was shown. OZ? was created using the rotoscoping technique , I pulled Miss Dorothy Gale out her American Classic The wizard of OZ and had her thrown from her tornado strewn home to land to mine. My favourite Aussie film from the 80’s was the classic Shame ,set in a small Australian town I felt it was the perfect place for our yank to land and explore ,and make new friends.
This work Tomboy Project 2020 was created just as the pandemic had hit, it was a piss take on the PSA’s of the nineteen 50’s The. “Tomboy “played by the fiuger I created who represented Tomboys the dog masked Wildfang , and the ‘girls’ played by my friends over acting in this ridiculous parody of in my opinion the absurdity of what I girl is or should be .
It’s just pretend was a work of self discovery ,growing up as a Tomboy I felt the pressure of not being allowed to show a vulnerable side of myself , I wanted to show not only the tough side but the soft side of the cinematic gender non conformist .
Drum Roll please was created to show that Gender nonconformity is a normal and not an act ,using Wildfang a character I know longer use as a representation of being a Tomboy ,showing that the mask does not come of it’s just who you are , I realize the irony of trying to show your truth with a person in a mask.
The Tomboy Gaze 2014 was my version of the Kuleshov effect , it was me trying to say that I’m all these girls what you see in them you see in me . It was made at art school and it shows but we all have to stat somewhere .
